Liar, Liar - The Castaways

“Ah, but then one night in some empty room
Where no curtains ever hung
Like a miracle some golden words
Rolled off of someone's tongue” - Thom Schuyler, writer and recorded by Lacy J. Dalton (16th Avenue)

Sometimes those “golden words” turn into lyrics like:

“Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire…”

Which some of us remember being on the radio our sophomore year in high school. "Liar, Liar" was written by Jim Donna on a napkin in his parents' house. Drummer Dennis Craswell and Jim's sister Joanne helped Donna write it. It took 2 hours to write. Donna and Craswell took it to the other members of The Castaways and they liked it. Another California surf band? Nope, The Castaways were a Minnesota garage rock band.

Recorded 59 years ago on March 2nd, 1965 it went all the way to #12 on the charts. It was The Castaways only hit record. Guess they were never able to capture such “golden words” again.

So you don’t have to try to figure it out, the dancer featured in this clip from “It’s A Bikini World” is Carolyn Brandt who went on to be known as the “Queen of Cult” having 36 movie credits to her name.

“It’s a Bikini World” (4.6 IMDB rating) pretty much spelled the end of the careers of Tommy Kirk and Deborah Walley. Both regretted having been a part of the movie.

And Jim Donna? He is still playing with The Castaways as the only remaining original member.

Lacy J. Dalton’s 16th Avenue peaked at #7 in 1982. Words matter.
