Nicolae Paladi - Cooking secrets in leaky cauldrons: promises of confidential computing

The sorry state of computer security along with the near-ubiquitous move to the cloud stimulated research in confidential computing, which aims to provide data and workload isolation using new hardware features increasingly available on all platforms – from servers to desktops mobile devices and IoT platforms.

Confidential computing provides users with unprecedented capabilities: both to obtain security guarantees about their workload and data running on remote devices, and to control in detail the interaction of their data and workloads with the rest of the software running on the same device. While such capabilities solve many security challenges and enable new applications, they are themselves not immune to the same security vulnerabilities that plague modern hardware and software. This talk introduces the concepts and ideas behind confidential computing, its applications to improve software security and the challenges that this approach to computer security faces.
