Bunnies at Britannia - still good?
The Britannia hotel in Umgeni Road is a Durban institution, built in 1879 and including 14 rooms, a dining room and a bar. While the 'whites only' bar of its early days was well appointed and set a new standard for sophistication in Durban, non-white customers were served through a hatch in the wall.
The hotel prospered for many years, until newer more modern hotels began to open on the beachfront, and then the roads were upgraded leading to an overpass being built directly in front of the hotel in the early 1980s.
At that point the hotel changed hands and was purchased by the Moodley family, who made it famous for its curries and bunny chows (info from Britannia's website).
We sat in the outdoor courtyard area and ordered patha rolls, paneer tikka masala samoosas and two bunnies, a mutton kebab and a standard mutton curry.
The starters were excellent and out of the ordinary which I enjoyed, the bunnies were good, but not great - particularly the mutton kebab which was tomato based, and tasted a lot like braai relish out of a tin. The quarter mutton was a solid effort, but could have been better with fresher bread and spicier curry. I would definitely return for another try, but I don't think this is Durban's best bunny, as some would have you believe!
