Coffee Adulteration | Business | Sarthak Ahuja

After Analogue Paneer… the next product you’ll see a lot of adulteration and fakes are in your coffee…

In the past 5 years, coffee prices have gone up from $1000 a tonne to $5000 a tonne.

It’s a 5X increase in 5 years, and a 3X in the past 3 years…

It’s all because the demand for coffee around the world has gone so up north, that people who never cared about it earlier are now into collecting coffees, and enjoying unique brews multiple times a day…

This is fuelled with constantly dropping yields…

Two if the largest suppliers in the world are Brazil and Vietnam, and they’re both seeing a poor crop season.

There is a high chance that these prices may remain unpredictable for another couple of years… so coffee companies in India and around the world are facing a very tough time with increasing costs, and pressure to increase price which they feel the market will not accept…

I predict that your Instant Coffee brands will soon change their composition to add a lot more chicory powder, which is the root of a plant, roasted and mixed into coffee blends…

As for the cafés you go to, if they are really into serving the best single origin coffees, their prices should go up by about 20%… so a Rs 300 cup may now cost closer to Rs 400

Also, currently, the instant coffee brands have 70% actual coffee and the balance is chicory, so remember to check the ingredients to see what you’re really drinking.
