Dancing is an important part of Namibia's social contemporary and traditional culture, which permeates every aspect of our social lives. We have a dance for every occasion, be it a wedding, healing ritual or a coming of age ceremony, and these dances have been at the heart of our African heritage and history for millennia.
In the good old days dance was just a normal and natural part of society. Most African dances came to be due to the prominance of indegenous knowledge sysytems which is transfered from generation to generation as a different avenue to express and communicate our different experiences. Dance is such an intrinsic part our native Oshiwambo culture, there various traditional dance styles within the Awambo culture which varies greately from the type of clan namely Ondilimani, Eenghama, Omupembe wandema and more.
Aawambo pepple are easily recognisable by what they wear. Their most popular clothing item is the Odelela fabric which is used to make long dresses with puffy short sleeves, skirts, and even shirts for men. The cloth has been widely modernised and is also used on other tribes traditional garments.
The Vibrant pink skirts with red and black stripes are swaying rhythmically to joyful singing and clapping of hands. The skirts are bound together with belts made out of beads or animal fur/ hide, women and men gather in a circle belong to about 20 people and dance joyfully to the native rhythmic sounds.
