I have & I don’t have - У меня есть & У меня нет. Common mistake in Russian | Learn Russian
If you look up in the dictionary
the word have – иметь,
I have – я имею,
I have a cat – у меня есть …
У меня есть + Nominative case
The owner/possessor is in the Genitive case, so меня is the Genitive case form of the personal pronoun я - I.
You need to learn the Genitive case forms of personal pronouns
I have a dream У меня есть мечта
You have a dream У тебя есть мечта
He has a dream У него есть мечта
She has a dream У неё есть мечта
We have a dream У нас есть мечта
You have a dream У вас есть мечта
They have a dream У них есть мечта
I have a book У меня есть книга
To make a question you just change the intonation.
Do you have a book? У тебя есть книга?
He has a sister У него есть сестра
We have a dog У нас есть собака
But if you want to say I don’t have
У меня нет + Genitive case
The word нет is always followed by a noun, noun phrase or pronoun in the Genitive case, that is why something or someone you don't have is must be in the Genitive case
I have a book У меня есть книга (Nominative)
I don’t have a book У меня нет книги (Genitive)
He has a sister У него есть сестра
He doesn’t have a sister У него нет сестры
We have a dog У нас есть собака
We don’t have a dog У нас нет собаки
