The Last Day For The Woolwich Ferry - 5th October 2018

The three ferries that operate the Woolwich Ferry have come to the end of their working life. The last day of operations being 5th October 2018.
Built in Dundee in 1963 the vessels were each named after prominent local politicians, John Burns, Ernest Bevin and James Newman.

The ferry service has run since 1308. The free ferry opened on 23 March 1889 and was operated by paddle steamers

Two brand new vessels will soon be doing the Thames river crossing named Ben Woollacott, after a former deckhand who sadly died while working on one of the ferries in 2011 and the locally born legendary singer Dame Vera Lynn.

Bonus. Waverley happened to be passing.
