Big swimbaits and COLD water winter bass fishing just go hand in hand. More so than any other time of the year the appeal of a truly large bait shines when a bass's metabolism slows. Big bass in particular are not looking to chase down lots of tiny meals in icy water....the benefit of a large meal can sustain that fish's need for food for up to a week! Additionally, when those air temps plummet you will almost certainly be the ONLY person on the water going for largemouth. The combination of next to zero fishing pressure and the allure of big baits had consistently paid dividends for me every single year in both the early early spring and winter (water temps not exceeding 40 degrees).
