Ugly Duckling | J29A Commentary and Kill Montage (War Thunder)

This is the story of how a flying beer keg with cannons strapped to it convinced me to give it a second chance despite truly horrible first impressions.

The Saab 29A is the first iteration of the Saab 29 "Flying Barrel", Sweden's native design for a jet fighter on par with the American Sabres and Soviet MiG-15s. In War Thunder, it sits at a battle rating of 7.7, at the intersection between early and mid tier jets. At first, this plane seemed extremely underwhelming, with lackluster engine performance and cannons that were very difficult to aim. However, I've since come to realize that the J29A is still a very competitive jet. The key to its success lies in energy management. The J29A has an extremely high top speed for its battle rating, and retains energy exceptionally well in maneuvers. That means that, though it is slow to gain energy due to its weak engine, once you save up energy, you can hold onto it for a long time. Couple this with its fantastic roll rate and robust combat flaps, and you can give even Sabres a run for their money in evasive maneuvers.

Ultimately, I can't really recommend the J29A since the J/A29B is at the same battle rating with slightly better performance; however, if you see this thing on the enemy team, don't dismiss it, no matter how good you think your own plane is. You don't want to end up on the wrong end of these guns.
