수박이의 갑작스러운 죽음은
호박과 청순, 우리를 모두 슬프게 한다.

수박이를 처음 만난 건 2월 초,
어느덧 2개월이 넘는 시간을 함께 했다.

나는 5월쯤 호박이와 수박이를
자연으로 돌려보내고 싶었으나
모든 것은 나의 바람대로 되지는 않는다.

얼마 전부터 수박이는 꿀 먹는 양이 줄었다.
나는 어리호박벌의 수명주기를 찾아봤고
수컷의 경우 이듬 해 봄에 죽는다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
하지만 이렇게 빨리 수박의 죽음이 찾아올 줄은 몰랐다.
(레인지의 경우 나에게 작별인사를 할 수 있는 며칠의 시간을 주었었다..)

다음날 나는 시골로 향했고
레인지의 옆에 수박이를 묻어주었다.

The sudden death of the watermelon makes us all sad.
