Marine Corps Athlete of the Year 2021

Athlete of the Year 🥇

#MarineCorps 1st Lt. Riley Compton and Staff Sgt. John Stefanowicz Jr. were named the Marine Corps Athletes of the Year for 2021.

The Marine Corps Athlete of the Year is awarded to active-duty Marines who demonstrate the best the Corps offers, both in sport and the embodiment of #USMCValues.

1st Lt. Compton shared her path from college athletics to becoming a #Marine officer. She took her athleticism to the next level by participating in an online combine for Team USA Bobsled and Skeleton and has since represented Team USA in the North American Cup and the National Team Push Championships. She qualified for the Junior World Championships in Austria and is on track to become a 2022-2023 National Team member and an Olympic athlete in 2026.

Staff Sgt. John Stefanowicz, a member of the All-Marine Wrestling Team and U.S. National Team, elected to move up a weight class during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the Tokyo Olympics. He proceeded to win six straight matches defeating the first, second, and fourth-seeded opponents. In doing so, he became the first Marine in 30 years to represent the United States in wrestling at the Olympic Games. At the Tokyo Games, SSgt Stefanowicz finished in 12th place.
