Tube liners, also known as tube flaps or tube boots, are used to protect tubes from wear, heat, and other irregularities in the rims. They are typically used on split rims, two-piece rims or vehicles with wood spoke wheels.

Changing a tire on a vintage rim can be a daunting task. The tube flap conforms to the rim shape after the tire has been installed and tube inflated. After many miles of driving, the tube flap may be stuck to the inside of the tire and rim making removal very difficult.

So, whether you are fixing a flat or changing tires this is the easiest method of getting a tire off by removing the tube flap and tube. I wasn't worried about scratching the rims because they are being sent out for powder coating. You may want to double or triple tape the edge of your rim to prevent it from being chipped or scratched while using the tire spoons.

Once you remove the tire bead from one side of the rim you will have to use tire spoons to get between the rim and tire flap to lift it up and out of the rim. With the tube flap outside the rim you can work on getting the rest of it out with the tube. Now that the tube and tire flap are safely out of the rim you can proceed to take the tire the rest of the way off.

The manufacturers recommend replacing tire flaps when you replace your tires. If you remove tire flaps for any reason check for rips or tears or any part of a tire flap that may chafe the tube and could cause an unwanted flat. If there are any issues replace the tire flap.

Tubes are usually dated and the replacement, because of age, is recommended. Replacing tubes ($30 each approx) or tire flaps ($30 each approx) starts to add up real quick especially when vintage tires are in the $200 range each.
