Antarctic Journey, Part 25: Crossing the Dreaded Drake Passage

The price of admission to Antarctica is crossing the Drake Passage between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. This area of the ocean is where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans collide. It is very rare to cross the Drake when you are not getting pounded my large waves. Some can be so big as to be life-threatening, as happened in December 2022 aboard the Viking Polaris, making its way back north from an Antarctic visit. You can avoid this by taking a flight each way, but these are extremely expensive, and not readily available. And, of course, you don’t just have to do it once, but twice, in the course of going south, then back north. This video shows some small period of time about midway through our journey back north to Ushuaia. It was much rougher going north, with waves reaching about 15 to 20 feet. I really want to go back to Antarctica someday, but only if I can avoid the Drake.
