Backward breathing? It’s a real thing

When you lift weights, you inhale to brace your core and torso as you lift, and hold or exhale as you move the weight.

In yoga, it's often the opposite. You exhale as you bend or lower your body and inhale as you rise or expand your chest. This breath pattern optimizes control of your pelvic floor, known as 'Mula Bandha.' It's crucial in yoga for stability in poses, deep core strength, and smooth transitions during practice.

At the bottom of the exhale, you can engage your pelvic floor much more easily, and since we’re only using our body weight, extreme bracing is not needed. Neither is right or wrong, just a different approach to training.
