Ukulele, Bass, & Drums - Roswell Virtual Showroom (Ep 7)

Ukulele, bass, and drums -- not a traditional trio, but it works so well! Abe Lagrimas, Jr is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with nine solo records and three ukulele instructional books to his credit. Gary Wicks is an accomplished touring musician and educator. Together they tracked a trio version of Abe's song "Can't Wait No More," with Abe on drums and ukulele and Gary on bass.

We livestreamed the recording session, focusing on the uke. We talked about all the microphone choices on drums, bass, and ukulele, and compared two mics on each of two ukuleles (which sound completely different).

Session co-host Charlie Waymire (Ultimate Studios, LA) shares his deep knowledge of mic choice, voicing, and placement, and how those interact with the source instrument and the mix. Roswell founder and mic designer Matt McGlynn contributes some insight into the mic design.

This is our seventh livestream from Ultimate Studios in Los Angeles. These events give you a center-console seat during a live recording session. Questions and comments about the gear and techniques will be answered in realtime by Matt McGlynn (founder of Roswell Pro Audio) and Charlie Waymire (owner of Ultimate Studios).

The first three episodes of this livestream series captured the full production of a song by Iron Point. We tracked guitars, percussion, drums, bass, and vocals, with the Roswell Mini K47 and K87 (plus a third mic for snare drum).
