Abstract:

Two days from now is the milestone 450th anniversary of the founding of the colonial City of Manila. But the history and relevance of the Kingdom of Maynila is far more older than that.

In between is a nameless leader from Macabebe, Pampanga who first rose up and died against the Spaniards in Luzon. His death took away the remaining obstacle for the occupation of the confederacy which gave rise to the Modern Capital City and the primate region of the Nation that we know today.

Intramuros, the walled city of Manila, tells a narrative of foreign imperial power cast in stone. But its rise as such was built upon the blood of Kapampangans and others led by a nameless leader 450 years ago. In the three centuries of Manila's history as a colonial city, other natives will follow the nameless hero's lead in challenging the "gahum" of Intramuros. This reinforces the historic role of Maynila since even before colonialism: Whoever holds it, holds kaginhawahan and the power to make it flow to the bayan or even stop it.

In commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the City of Manila and in observance of the Year of Filipino Pre-Colonial Ancestors, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila, in partnership with the National Quincentennial Committee, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and Intramuros Administration, launches the Araw ng Maynila Lecture Series Online.
