Cold Sores | Oral Herpes | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Treatment

Lesson on Cold Sores (known as Herpes Labialis). Cold sores are a cutaneous manifestation of infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which presents as an eruption of painful cluster of vesicles. During the primary infection, this episode of infection can last longer with possible systemic symptoms. After resolution of symptoms, the infection can lie dormant within our bodies. After something that may cause us to become immunosuppressed, HSV can reactivate and cause a recurrent infection. Lips are not the only part of the body where herpes can manifest - there are a variety of cutaneous and mucosal manifestations that we talk about in this lesson.
