Arthur M. Anderson - A Good Morning Master Salute
The legendary Arthur M. Anderson is always a welcome sight for boat watchers. And this departure from Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of August 19, 2020 is no exception. The Anderson arrived in Duluth to drop off a load of limestone at the Hallet #5 dock. She then remained at the dock to pick up a load of blast furnace trim, which is pulverized taconite (iron ore) used to adjust the silica content in blast furnaces. Loading the blast furnace trim is a messy process, often with billowing clouds of dust present. Note that the dust has stained the port side of the Anderson where it was loaded into each cargo bay hatch.
The video starts with a view of the Anderson shortly after she departed the Hallet dock and as she makes her ways towards the John A. Blatnik highway bridge. I then re-located to the Duluth shipping canal to watch her make the passage onto Lake Superior. For all of the previous recordings I've made of the Anderson, she gave us a traditional captain's salute, consisting of one long and two short blasts. For this departure, however, she gave the longer master salute... consisting of three long and two short blasts. I'm not sure what makes a ship change up its salute routine. It could be a change of hands on the bridge, especially if a relief captain is in charge. Or it might just be a change of mood of the captain. Hard to say, but it's hear to see a variation in salutes!
The Anderson has been a frequent sight to Duluth in 2020, visiting more often than the other classic lakers in the Great Lakes Fleet. This makes a pleasant change from 2019, where she only seemed to visit a handful of times after being reactivated from her layup. Hopefully the frequent visits will continue into the foreseeable future!
