Ban Seaweed harvesting.

Mechanical seaweed harvesting on the Norwegian coast is a recipe for ecological disaster.
Some types of seaweed along the southern coast of Norway have all but dissapeared.
One aim of the seaweed harvesters is to reduce the wildlife in the forests by harvesting before full regrowth occurs because it produces better alginates.
France is experiencing huge tidal drifts of a type of seaweed that has caused at least one death and the death of many animals. France has unregulated harvesting.
The south coast of the uk is also experiencing the same drifts of seaweed, both are linked to changes in the sea.
Responsible organisations like the soil association have already banned mechanically harvested seaweed in their products.
Seaweed has up to 100,000 individual organisms per cubic metre - it provides food and homes for fish, crabs, immature lobsters and vast numbers of other creatures, stabalises the sea bed, dampens wave effects, clears debris from the water and cleans the sea of human and animal waste, it is the nearest thing the west has to the rain forest.
Marine protection organisations must be aware of what is happening but dont answer requests for information.
There is a huge amount of information about this on the web, but much of it is dry and in reams of scientific papers.
Please google ban seaweed harvesting and join our facebook side - we need all the help we can get to stop this dangerous and harmful practice.
We also now have a website with links to pertinant papers showing some of what is happening around the world that may be related to seaweed beds being disturbed.
