We sat with Dr. Kathryn Paige Harden to discuss her book. The Genetic Lottery: Why DNA Matters for Social Equality.
The book covers foundational concepts about genetics delivered for a general audience, while exploring and explaining the field of genetics in the context of how genetic variances correlate with academic outcomes. An interesting and quite a provocative premise meant to draw our attention to the facts and away from what the author calls the interpretive vacuum that political extremists have been happy to exploit for so long.
Dr. Harden is a tenured professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas, where she leads the Developmental Behavior Genetics lab and co-directs the Texas Twin Project.
She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia, and has published over 100 scientific articles on genetic influences on complex human behavior, including child cognitive development, academic achievement, and mental health. Her research has been featured in popular media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Huffington Post.
