Royal Commission needed after inquiry fails to uncover security decision: Tim Smith

Victoria’s political opposition is demanding key witnesses be recalled to the state’s hotel quarantine inquiry after new evidence failed to shed light on who made the decision to hire private security.

The inquiry was set up following the hotel quarantine debacle which triggered a destructive second wave of the virus.

Liberal MP Tim Smith said high-profile figures must be brought back and cross examined in order to uncover more information and pushed for a Royal Commission to look further into the incident.

Evidence was tendered during the inquiry’s final sitting which revealed emails indicating Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton had major concerns he was not included in the set-up of the program.

It also released the premier’s media briefing notes on the day the program was launched proving military support was on offer, a fact Daniel Andrews has consistently denied.

In a new statement to the inquiry committee, the premier said he probably was briefed by his staff, but was unable to recall it.

The final report is due to be handed down by December 21.
