Emtelle Continuous Ducting Installation
A short video showing how the Emtelle Continuous Ducting Solution is installed. Each step of the process is shown, from unwinding the coil to a full repair solution.
“Emtelle participate in Motorways Communications trials with Costain/J McCann on the M1 Motorway in November 2015”
The Emtelle continuous duct solution is designed to reduce the amount of time digging, installing and jointing multi way duct systems between access chambers or points of presentation.
Emtelle recently supplied a 300 metre coil of a newly designed 4 way continuous duct, designed for shallow depth burial. The new duct consists of a 4 way bundle of sub ducts all sheathed within a thin purple outer skin to match the current highways colour standards.
The purpose of the trial was to assist the primary contractors and their sub-contractors in moving away from traditional methods of jointing 6 metre sticks of duct. The current system is time consuming, requiring additional testing and proving methods, which can often prove troublesome due to issues with couplers and sealing rings.
The current system requires a deeper and wider trench profile with virgin back fill material and spoil to be disposed of, versus the Emtelle continuous ducting that is installed in a shallow trench (300mm of cover) with graded “as-dug” material. This equates to reduced costs and less environmental impact by the contractors and schemes of work.
The trial was conducted with a boom mounted trencher which graded the as-dug material to class 8 at the same time as digging. Overall 80 metres was excavated, and ducting was linked between two access chambers on a live trial site on the M1 motorway in Rotherham.
Emtelle has the ability to provide lengths of up to 500 metres meaning the installation time, amount of labour required and transportation of materials is all at a significant saving to the scheme being worked on. Therefore each upgrade scheme can potentially finish sooner, reducing the impact on road users.
Trials were a success and final plans and duct system designs are still being worked on, please check back here for updates.
