Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925 in West Plain, Missouri. He dropped out of high school in his senior year to join the Air Force but was initially turned away because he was underweight. After several attempts, he was accepted and served as a radio announcer and later in the Special Services as an entertainer.
After the war, he tried to break into the advertising industry but after a short-lived attempt at running an agency, he ended up back in the entertainment business. He hosted several game shows in the late 1950s and landed the role that made him famous, Rob Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show, in 1961.
He starred as the chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins in 1964, a role that has been a source of embarrassment for him ever since. He’s never lived down the atrocious Cockney accent he adopted for that film. In spite of the ribbing, he’s beloved for the part he played in the film, creating several generations of fans since its release.
Van Dyke continued to act in film and on television in the years that followed, including the lead role of Dr. Mark Stone in Diagnosis: Murder in the 1990s and early 2000s.
At 95, Dick Van Dyke continues to amaze fans with his energy and generosity, including through the shocking decision he recently made while in Malibu, California.
