Lets Build A 1U Low Power Server
I wanted to have a second server that would my "mission critical" tasks so I could have the ability to tinker more with Thanos server. One of the prerequisites was to have it sip power rather then guzzle it down like Thanos.
Since Thanos is my first server, and he is a big 4U Plex server, I decided to name this new low powered server "Nebula", one of Thanos' adopted daughters.
For this build I decided to go with a cse-813 1U chassis from supermicro, with a X9SCL-F motherboard. This motherboard also supports IPMI interface so I can learn how to use this tool. The CPU is a E3-1220L V2 which is dual core, quad thread and has a TDP of only 17 watts. For ram I opted for 16GB of ECC DDR3 1600Mhz ram, although in hindsight it looks like I could have got away with only 8GB.
For storage I'm using a Samsung 970 EVO 250GB NVME drive, and also added a Samsung PM963 960GB NVME drive to store surveillance camera footage onto. FOr right now I have 2 10TB spinners that will be used exclusively for my Storj node that will be running on this server.
The motherboard has the ability to throttle the case fans to 30% which makes this chassis much quieter, although still audible. This is one of the crutches of using a 1U case, small fast spinning noisy fans.
Power consumption from this setup is around 27 watts at full idle and disks spun down. Under normal workload it hovers around the 51-54 watt range, with infrequent peaks up to 60 watts.
