Is the Eye Movement Element of EMDR Effective?
This video describes the controversy surrounding Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR has been shown to be effective for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), however, the element of the therapy that appears to be effective is imaginal exposure, which is an established element in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). The eye movement element of EMDR does not appear to add effectiveness to EMDR above the effectiveness measured by imaginal exposure. Also, the use of EMDR has expanded beyond only PTSD, although there is a lack of clear evidence EMDR is effective for other mental health disorders.
