Vidya Balan Vocalises Modern Thinking Women and their Essential Selfish Choices #Vidya_Balan
While talking about Vidya Balan’s movie role as the mathematical genius Shakuntala Devi, Vani Tripathi Tikoo asserted that given the faultlines that Devi shared with her daughter, “It could have been that the mother could’ve been the villain of the piece but she wasn’t!”
Balan, to answer the question whether the ‘working’ part works if one is a ‘working mother’, said that these were conversations that would happen quite frequently on the set. “One as working mothers and then just as mothers, as wives, as daughters, as women…I think we are always guilt-ridden,” said Balan and added that women tend to take on much more than a human being should possibly take up.
“We expect ourselves to be goddesses but we don’t treat ourselves like that!”Balan claimed. It is amazing, feels the actress, that even today, women find it difficult to make choices that could come across as ‘selfish’ - this is exactly why she admires Devi, because she never judged herself.
Talking about an experience on the set, she noted that Anu Menon wanted to be in London with her daughter throughout the crucial time “and yet she was in Mumbai, filmmaking”. Even Balan’s sister is a working woman and though she does well for herself, she actually passed on a huge promotion because she felt she might not be able to be there for her kids. “I think we are all doing this all the time, and look at Shakuntala Devi…she wanted it all, she went ahead and got it all on her own terms!”
