3 Ways TO BE HEARD When Talking To A CHRONIC INTERRUPTER!

Everyone is irritated when another person talks over their conversation, projecting that what they have to say is more important, and by extension, that they are higher status than you.

There are three effective techniques you can assimilate to counteract this aggravating habit when you are the recipient:

1) Simply stop the conversation and address the rude interruption. A simple phrase such as, "Do you mind if I finish?" can gently halt the other person from talking over you, without being overly confrontational or edgy.

2) Repeat the other individual's first name until they stop their intrusion on your speech. You are calling out their inappropriateness, without inflaming the interaction to an unnecessary level. Be mindful that this second strategy usually works best with people with whom we are not regularly and intimately in contact.

3) As a last resort, if you are clearly in a situation where there is an obvious "status battle" with the other party, you may have to resort to the "Bulldozer." You will simply talk over the other person's interruption, continuing your statement as if no disruption had occurred. As a part of this response, you will also increase your volume, sharpen your voice tone and assume a solid, confident bodily posture, even making direct eye contact with the offender.

The above detailed tools will not only publicly enhance your status, but will increase the importance of what you have to say in the eyes of others. And, as your status rises, the likelihood of encountering such "talking over" eruptions will be less and less likely to take place.
