Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: I started as usual, by learning some chords and some easy songs, progressed to some faster more complicated songs, finger picking and arpeggios. But now, I'm feeling a need for theory, to be able to start understanding & creating chords, and to be able to solo. My question is, what are the steps to follow? What is it that I need after some chords and some songs to progress? Thanks Andrew!
Pedro - Wiesbaden Germany
A: Most guitar players will reach a point where they feel that their basic technical level has progressed way past their knowledge of, "Guitar Theory," and "Music Theory." At this point, players need to start forming a plan that is based upon an academic approach. This means players will need to seek out a good guitar curriculum that will move them along in a 'chapter by chapter' approach through material. YouTube videos are good but, they tend to be far too random. Getting a private teacher can also be nice, but if there isn't a program to follow with the teacher, the weekly lessons will again tend to be too random. Keep in mind, that a huge amount of personal discipline is required to be able to stick with a course. So, in this video I can give you the outline of what you will need in your course, but it's up to you to put it into a disciplined daily routine for the results!
