Jamnagar district and sessions court awards sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt life for custodial death in a case from 1990. One VHP member named Prabhudas Vaishnani died in hospital after being released from police custody. He and other VHP members were rounded up on Sanjeev Bhatt's orders after communal clash in Jamjodhpur town. Court has ruled that Vaishnani was tortured in jail by Bhatt and other policemen. Bhatt has been ruled guilty of murder.

Bhatt shot to headlines in 2015 when he claimed that he attended a meeting on CM Narendra Modi's residence on evening of 27 February, 2002. In the alleged meeting Modi had reportedly told state officials to let Hindus 'vent their anger'. The Supreme Court had junked these claims.
