The Sakurajima volcano in southwestern Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture erupted on Sunday, raising the eruption alert level to its highest level, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Volcanic rocks fell up to 2.5 kilometers from the volcano, but there were no immediate reports of injuries following the eruption, which occurred around 8:05 p.m., the agency and local police said.
After the eruption, the agency raised the volcano's alert level from 3 to 5 on a 5-point scale, warning the public to evacuate. This is the first time a volcano has been assigned a level 5.
The Prime Minister's Office said they were collecting information on the situation.
Since Monday, the agency has observed minor movements in the earth's crust, indicating the expansion of the volcano.
The agency urges caution regarding falling rocks and pyroclastic flows within a 2 km radius of the Minamidake and Showa craters.
Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes and is associated with the Osumi Peninsula in Kyushu, the country's southwestern main island.
