Long Term Shelter In The Woods - Building a Fence and a Moss Roof Firewood Shelter (Part 10)

Long Term Shelter In The Woods - Making a small fence in front of the house and a small rock and wood table for enjoying time outside during the warm seasons - Building a small firewood shelter with a moss roof - Making a bushcraft wooden mallet that helped me with my work (my ax was very grateful) - Cooking soup over a campfire and using traditional vessels for eating - I had an unexpected guest for dinner: a noisy deer approached my camp. No talking, only peaceful nature sounds. If you want to find out more about all of these and the story behind this video, please read on.
I wanted to add a small fence in front of my forest house to make it feel more like home. Our traditional houses often have a small beautiful place built in front of the house called "pridvor", or "prispa" that was often surrounded by a beautifully and skillfully carved wooden fence (a porch might be an English equivalent). The role of this part of the house in the past was storing nuts, beans, onions (to dry) or it was used to work there in the shade or even sleep there during summer. What I built is not as complex or beautiful, but it was enough to offer me that peaceful homely feeling.
I also made a small firewood shelter covered with a moss roof (actually the roof was made of many layers - wood, a waterproof tarp, reed, dried leaves and I added moss on top of that). I might improve it with time to protect the firewood even better from rain and moisture. The moss roof gave it a wonderful aspect. It's the first time I use it and I love the way it looks and feels.
The visit I had while I was preparing dinner was that of a very brave deer. I could not see it, only saw part of him when it ran away, as it was already dark outside. I heard him surrounding the area, then he came very close and barked at me, stumping the earth with his feet. Probably was not very happy to meet me there, but I loved to have such an honored guest for dinner.
The vessels I used for eating soup and the one I put my flowers in are similar to the ones my ancestors used to eat from - they used clay vessels and wooden spoons. The vessels are handmade and decorated with flower and animal motives. The one on the plate I used is very often encountered, not only on vessels, but also on traditional blouses, on our traditional carpets, carved on traditional furniture or on the pillars of the old homes, it even was used as the shape given to children's toys in the past and it was painted with wax on Easter eggs - I am talking about the rooster - which is regarded as more than a common bird - it is a symbol of light, a solar bird that announces the end of the powers of evil and darkness, and the victory of the Sun, of light and truth. It is also a symbol of a new beginning and of renewal.
And because I mentioned our traditional pottery, I would also like to introduce you to a very talented Romanian artist that works with clay called Dan Les. I found a video about him and his work that also includes his beautiful and authentic conception about life - it comes with English subtitles as it was made by National Geographic and it will help you understand better why I am doing what I am doing, why I spend so much time working like this and why I make these videos. Some of you insisted on asking this question, saying you can't really understand why I am doing this and here is the answer. The reason is very beautifully said in this wonderful video. You will also see the "pridvor" I was talking about above in this video, as Dan Les lives in a traditional house in Maramures. Enjoy!

Vegetable soup recipe: add chopped vegetables in boiling water (onions, potatoes, carrots, green peas, pepper - various colors, cherry tomatoes, etc.), a mixture of spices of your liking (I added curry, salt, pepper, sweet and chili red pepper powder, garlic powder, dried basil, dried vegetable's powder made at home). When the soup is almost done also add some chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, basil, etc.) and olive oil. I also sprinkled a part of the fresh herbs and chopped green onion leaves on top after I poured the soup into my plate. It is a dish that is often consumed here (almost daily by my people) with different variations - some will make it sour, some will add pasta or spaghetti to it and meat, others will add eggs or cream.
