Can a shorter chain make it easier to secure a load on your trailer?

I’ve noticed over the years that everybody end their brother sells 20 ft grade 70 transport chains to the trucking industry. But then I see all these drivers with excess chain across the deck, or rolled up in a big knot and bungee corded to the deck somewhere.

There are a lot more options than 20 ft or 25 ft transport chain with grab hooks on each end. You can put safety slip hooks on there and have shorter pieces that are t so expensive and so heavy to lug around. Even if you need a duper high tensile chain, sometimes you can save time, money and your shoulder’s rotator cuff by getting a few short pieces of grade 100 chain. It’s easy to plan your load securement if you just memorize the following safe working load limits, (WLL)and what chain binder to use.

5/16 inch chain link diameter grade 70 = 4,700 lb. go with the 7,100 lb food over ratchet binder. It’s a little more money, but it will match all the way up ton3/8 grade 80 chain AND YOU CAN LOCK IT.

3/8 inch chain link diameter grade 70 = 6,600 lb . Use same binder above .

3/8 inch chain link diameter grade 100 = 8,800 lb. use the 12,000 lb fold over ratchet binder or one of similar strength.

1/2 inch chain link diameter grade 70 = 11,300 lb. use same binder above.

1/2 inch chain link diameter grade 100 = 15,000 lb got to use the Big 1/2-5/8 ratchet binder that has a working load limit of 18,000 lbs

Never use a chain less than grade 80 for overhead lifting. Always consult your chain dealer if in doubt. We’ll be glad to help you be safe even if we’re not your chain dealer. 866-855-4285
