Auto-Discovery in Industry 4.0 Using MQTT Sparkplug, PLCNext Gateway, HiveMQ Broker & Ignition SCADA

One of the biggest challenges in integrating data from industrial data sources is the ability to automatically discover the components producing the data. The simplest way to achieve that is to connect your data sources to an MQTT Sparkplug network. In this video, Kudzai Manditerza, Developer Advocate at HiveMQ, demonstrates how to use MQTT Sparkplug specification to bring auto-discovery to your industry 4.0 setup.

For the purpose of the demo, Kudzai is using the Ignition SCADA platform that can automatically discover a PLCNext Controller and visualize the telemetry data. To enable the PLCNext Controller to participate in an MQTT Sparkplug Network, he will deploy it onto the controller, a PLCNext Edge Gateway, a software runtime that effectively turns the controller into a Sparkplug Edge of Network Node. Both components will be connected through a cloud-based HiveMQ MQTT Broker to coordinate the discovery process and exchange of information.
