STATUS: DECLASSIFIED

In 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of files connected to a classified intelligence program that had been running for nearly twenty years.

Boxes of documents were pulled from storage.
Loaded into shredders.
Fed into incinerators.

By the time investigators began examining the program, much of the paper trail was already gone.

The program was called MKUltra.

MKUltra was a covert CIA mind control research program conducted during the Cold War between 1953 and 1973.

Beginning in 1953, the CIA funded a series of experiments exploring behavioral control, psychological manipulation, and the limits of the human mind. Research spread through universities, hospitals, prisons, and laboratories across the United States and Canada.

Many of the institutions receiving funding never knew the CIA was behind it.

Some experiments involved LSD, sensory deprivation, sleep manipulation, and electroshock therapy. Others took place inside covert safe houses where subjects were observed through one-way mirrors.

In 1975, congressional investigations uncovered fragments of the program.

But most of the files had already been destroyed.

Roughly 20,000 pages of documents survived by accident, hidden among routine budget records.

What survived confirmed the program existed.

What was lost may never be known.
This episode examines the surviving documents from Project MKUltra, including the role of CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb, Operation Midnight Climax, the Allan Memorial Institute experiments, and the case of Frank Olson.

Sources include declassified records from the CIA Reading Room and the U.S. Senate Church Committee investigation.
