how to keep your gutters from plugging up without spending a lot of money

I got everything from home depot where they keep the gutters. The spongy stuff was made for 5"gutter and your suppose to put it in your entire gutter. I just cut it wide enough the cover the down spout hole. It worked fine on my 6" if I flipped it over and put some gutter sealant on the back side. I'm hoping the sponge cover will keep the debri from going down the gutter and plugging it up because that is much harder to clean out.

I know it will still plug up but hopefully will still allow water to flow. I will let everyone know how it does in the fall which is when I would always have problems with leaves blocking the down spouts.
