Universal expands Harry Potter offerings with new wizarding world at new theme park Epic Universe

Universal has added to its Harry Potter offerings with a third Wizarding World at its new theme park Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida.

The Ministry of Magic recreates 1920s Paris, as seen in the Warner Bros “Fantastic Beasts” series, as the British Ministry of Magic, set in 1990s London. The main attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, takes riders to the trial of witch Dolores Umbridge, and culminates in a battle against the spectral death-eaters.

“We wanted to bring to life the ministry of magic from the movies, from the books, at full glamor, full glory, full scale, and that's I think what we did. And so when guests walk in, I think they will see the level of immersion, the levels of detail, and just really have an amazing time, said Anisha Vyas Burgos, assistant director of projects.

The opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter marked a watershed moment for Universal’s Orlando resort, helping to fuel attendance with an experience that faithfully recreated the Warner Bros movies. A second Potter-themed attraction, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter-Diagon Alley, opened in 2014.

“Love when guests tell me that they feel like they were in the movies and it just it really the technology helps bring that to life in such a new way but also we have seen that we've done things that we never done before there's so many layers now of technology and so being able to work with so many different specialties that bring it together was so incredible,” said Vyas Burgos.

Universal’s theme park business has been rooted in its movie-making from its earliest days offering studio tours a century ago. When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, it promoted the park as offering the chance to “ride the movies.”

An estimated $7 billion investment has doubled the resort’s size, adding 750 acres and populating it with familiar movie and game characters, which it owns or licenses. It features four other themed worlds: Super Nintendo World; How to Train Your Dragon-Isle of Berk; Celestial Park; and Dark Universe.

Epic Universe represents the largest investment Comcast has made in Universal’s theme parks since gaining control of the business in 2011. Analysts say it poses a heightened competitive threat to Walt Disney World, whose last major expansion was in 2019.

The park will open to the general public on May 22nd.
