Douglas B-66 Destroyer - A Bomber that Never Actually Destroyed Anything
The Douglas B-66 Destroyer was a highly valuable asset during the Vietnam War. Built during the 1950s, the aircraft would eventually become a productive support aircraft, and a very versatile one at that.
The Destroyer was initially based on the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, but its design eventually evolved to a mostly original model as several requirements kept coming from the US Navy.
Despite its moniker, the Destroyer served most notably as an electronic countermeasures aircraft, guiding several bombing strikes in North Vietnam.
In 1972, when the US troops were being withdrawn from the Southasian conflict, the enemy strategically targeted several top officers.
One of them was Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Hambleton, who on April 2 volunteered as a navigator aboard an EB-66C and was the only crew member to survive when the aircraft met unexpected ground fire during the most formidable North Vietnamese strike of the entire war.
