From its opening to the ballroom scene, “The Beauty and The Beast” has been a Disney favourite since the movie’s release in 1991. Belle’s love for books, commitment to her father, and refusal to marry the town’s most eligible bachelor, Gaston, are only some of the reasons why audience’s were eager to see how Emma Watson would portray the iconic Disney Princess in the 2017 live action adaptation. Although it’s one of the favoured movies locked inside the Disney vault, you’ll be shocked to hear the disturbing real story behind “Beauty and The Beast.”

As much as audiences have admired Belle’s ability to reverse the Beasts’ curse as she seduces him and viewers alike, this story’s origin has a much darker past. In fact, while some might venture to call Belle a feminist character, she is based on perpetuating the complete opposite ideal.
