Fanfare For The Common Man - BBCSO Discover #OneOrchestra
I'm a big fan of Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra. As a hobbyist composer, it's great to have a full orchestra, in one library, sitting inside my Mac.
However, it's an expensive hobby, and if you are interested in trying it out, it can be daunting to collect enough sample libraries to get a great sound without breaking the bank.
I was delighted to see that Spitfire has released two new versions of BBC Symphony Orchestra - the Discover version is only $49, or free if you fill out a form. I can't think of a better way to get started with creating amazing sounding orchestral compositions. What a wonderful opportunity for everyone with a Mac to grab GarageBand (or a similar free DAW like Cakewalk on Windows) and start composing.
So, since the Pro version of BBCSO lets you write for the other two versions, I thought it would be fun to see how the Discover version works and how useful it is. It's amazing!
This is Fanfare For The Common Man, by Aaron Copland, programmed in the Discover version of BBC Symphony Orchestra. All other plug-ins are Logic Pro X stock. I'm sure you could get this working in GarageBand too!
I can't think of a better song to showcase this opportunity for everyone to become an orchestral composer, if only at home as a hobby. If you are a hobbyist pianist who's thought of composing for orchestra and has a PC or Mac, give it a shot!
If you have Logic Pro X and want to see how I transcribed this, the project file is located here.
