Balochistan Has Become Pakistan’s Biggest Internal Crisis

Recent developments in Balochistan make one thing unmistakably clear: Pakistan’s gravest security challenge is no longer external. It is internal.

Coordinated attacks by the Baloch Liberation Army, official admissions that security forces are “physically handicapped,” and the rare but growing participation of women in armed resistance all point to a deeper structural crisis not an isolated insurgency.

Balochistan’s conflict is rooted in history. The region was forcibly annexed in 1948, and decades of political exclusion, economic exploitation, and heavy-handed security policies have followed. While Balochistan supplies much of Pakistan’s natural gas and strategic minerals, it remains the country’s poorest province.

Mega-projects like CPEC and Gwadar were projected as symbols of prosperity, but for many locals they represent displacement and exclusion. When development bypasses people and force replaces dialogue, resentment hardens into ideology and ideology turns violent.
