Emilia Nilsson Garip Was Selected to the Swedish Olympic Team by Utah Athletics

University of Utah diver Emilia Nilsson Garip has been officially selected to represent Sweden at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the Swedish Olympic Team announced on March 14.

"I'm very happy for Emilia and so proud of her," said head coach Jonas Persson. "From personal experience, I know how hard it is to make this team, how much work and sacrifices it takes. It's the program's first Olympian since 2000, so it's a big deal for us. Being a Swedish Olympian, from the same city and club team as Emilia and Elias Petersen, it's personally very special. I don't get to coach her, but it's just so fun to have her around the team, and she makes everyone better. Also, I'm very grateful for the hard work Richard and Gabby have done.

"Emilia truly deserves this and I can't wait to see how she does, first at NCAA's next week, then in Paris at the Games!"

The diving events at the XXXII Olympiad are set to take place from July 27 to August 10 at the Paris Aquatic Center. Nilsson Garip is currently slated to compete for Sweden in the 3m, which is scheduled to begin competition on August 7.

"I'm so excited for Emilia," said head diving coach Richard Marschner, "as this is something she has worked her entire life for. Going to the Olympics is a childhood dream for so many and accomplishing that goal takes more work than anyone could imagine.
"Emilia has been a wonderful part of our team and it has been so much fun to coach her and her teammates, as they all push each other to make each other better. This team truly functions under the mantra of a 'rising tide lifts all boats' and Emilia's selection to the Olympics is exciting for us all. She has a lot of preparation ahead of her and I can't wait to see her represent Utah and Sweden in Paris!"

Nilsson Garip recently represented her home country at the World Championships in Qatar in February. She posted a 10th-place finish in the women's 1m and teamed up with fellow Ute Elias Petersen to take sixth in the 3m Synchronized diving competition.

Nilsson Garip has already put together an incredible freshman season for the University of Utah swimming and diving team, including becoming the first Ute to ever capture two Pac-12 Championships, taking home first place in the 1m and the 3m. She accomplished that feat at the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships and Nilsson Garip also left that competition as diver of the meet. She's secured the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships, on the docket for March 20 - 23, in the 1m and the 3m as well.
