Scheer criticizes Trudeau’s foreign policy after losing bid on UN security council

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the House of Commons on Thursday over the Liberals’ foreign policy after Canada lost a bid on a seat in the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday.

"Trudeau remained silent in front of dictators and leaders of countries with terrible human rights because he was afraid of offending them and losing their vote.” Scheer said.

He recalled Trudeau’s relations with Iran when he “shook the hand of the Iranian foreign minister months after the deadly plane crash that killed dozens of Canadians in January.

Scheer also mentioned Trudeau’s vote in favour of what he described as “one-sided anti-Israel” resolution in the United Nations and said Trudeau repeatedly "turned his back on Canada’s allies and stood beside dictators."

Trudeau responded to Scheer by saying “it’s always worth it for Canada to step up on the world stage” and that he takes no lessons on international engagement from the opposition party “who promised to cut foreign aid in the last election.”

Trudeau added that Canadians always expect their country to step up on the world stage and that’s what his government has been doing in the past five years and will continue to do so.
