Vinesh, Sakshi, Bajrang Have Given Us Hope By Saying They Won’t Be Bystanders To Abuse Anymore
The mai-baap culture wherein the average person has no rights but is at the mercy entirely of the goodwill of the powers that be is endemic to sports administration in India. More often than not, these federations are helmed by political heavy weights and are populated by cronies who are in their positions thanks to patronage. Like Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, President, Wrestling Federation of India. Last week, India’s biggest wrestling stars, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Mallik, Bajrang Punia and others took to the streets asking for an end to what they said was a culture of intimidation that stripped them of their dignity and of abuse of power that included sexual abuse and financial misappropriation. Institutionally overlooked if not sanctioned abuse in sport is a global problem. Dr Payoshni Mitra, a leading athlete rights activist, helps us understand the structural and cultural reasons for this.
