Play Africa - Women in STEM - How can educators & parents help children to think scientifically?

The scientific method we're taught in school includes various steps: observe, ask a question, develop a hypothesis, do an experiment, analyse the results of the experiment, and develop a conclusion.

But scientific thinking starts by asking questions. Simply by encouraging children to ask questions, educators and parents can play an important role in helping children develop scientific thinking! Start with question words: How? Why? and What?

Learn more from Mila Bond and Nthabiseng Nkojoana, who give examples related to Covid-19. This short video was produced for Play Africa’s Women in STEM series by the The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria.

Play Africa's #womeninstem video series includes child-friendly interviews with a range of women scientists. These videos can be used by parents and educators to teach children about various fields of science, inspiring a new generation of scientists and innovators. We bring the excitement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to South African children of different backgrounds, ages and abilities. Everyone can become a scientist!

Many educators and parents tell us they want to use play to help introduce children to STEM skills, and awareness of the changing world around them, but often don't know where to start. We help educators and parents learn how to enliven and enrich their early learning with playful STEM centres, using easy-to-find, everyday materials. Together with educators and parents, we can help build critical skills for a changing world.

Play Africa (playafrica.org.za) is southern Africa's leading children’s museum, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Based at the iconic Constitution Hill, a former prison complex that is now the seat of South Africa’s Constitutional Court, Play Africa operates in the courtyards just 15 metres from the cell where former President Nelson Mandela was once incarcerated. As an independent cultural institution, its exhibits and programmes are designed to stimulate imagination, experimentation, innovation and problem-solving in children, as well as their families and educators.
