Anti-Friction Bearings (Ball and Roller Bearings)

This video shows how anti-friction bearings work. We take a look at the two most common bearing designs, the anti-friction, and plain bearing designs. We then discuss the ball and roller bearing designs; common bearing components are discussed in order to explain how bearings work.

▶️Introduction
Anti-friction bearings are also known as rolling contact bearings or rolling bearings. This video does not discuss plain bearings in detail because this will be covered in another video.

There are two main categories of anti-friction bearing, the ball bearing and the roller bearing. Both types usually consist of the following components:

Cage/Retainer/Separator
Rolling Elements (Balls, Cylinders, Needles, Tapered, Barrel)
Inner Ring / Inner Race
Outer Ring / Outer Race
Raceways (where the balls roll)
Some anti-friction bearings also utilise a seal or shield.

Ball bearings come in many different designs. Shallow groove, deep groove (Conrad), thrust and spherical, all are ball bearing designs.

Roller bearings are either of the cylinder, tapered, barrel (spherical) or needle types.

How Anti-Friction Bearings Work
One ring is stationary (usually the outer ring) and one ring is free to rotate (usually the inner ring). The inner ring is attached to a shaft whilst the outer ring is retained within a housing. As the shaft rotates, so too do the inner ring and rolling elements (balls or rollers).

Lubrication
Anti-Friction bearings are usually grease lubricated. As the rolling elements rotate, the grease is squeezed between the races and the rolling elements, which releases oil (lubricant) suspended in the grease. Bearings may be oil or grease lubricated, but grease is the most common form of lubricant.
