DIY Ultralight Cookset - Dirt Cheap! (3oz)
Making a ultralight cooking set for backpacking and hiking using household items without spending a dime.
////////////////////////////////////////
Sure it's no Titanium pot, but it also didn't cost me $50 - $100. Honestly, I think the Titanium cook-sets look pretty cool, but I've got plenty of other hiking gear that I deserves an upgrade before I do that.
For now, the solution was pretty simple:
1 Cat Can Stove - Made from a 3oz can of Fancy Feast Cat Food
1 29oz Tin Can - In my case, it was some canned tomatoes. They were quite tasty.
Pieces of aluminum foil to use as a custom lightweight lid.
Some denatured alcohol from my basement to use as a cheap, reliable fuel source.
Plastic Water Bottle to hold the fuel.
Total Weight without Fuel: 3oz
Total Weight with enough Fuel for 4 batches of Ramen Noodles: 5.25oz
Optional - 1 Light My Fire Spork (Any fast food utensile could work too)
Optional - Plastic Medicine Cup to measure fuel (you know, from that old bottle of 'tussin)
/////////////////////////////////////////
So there you have it, simple, effective, lightweight and practically free. Weight-wise it's hard to beat. Now, ounce for ounce, alcohol doesn't necessarily;y have the best weight to energy ratio, but where it shines is it's ability to scale to your needs. You can bring exactly as much (or little) as you need. Compare that to an MSR fuel canister (white gas etc) weighing in at about a half pound a piece. Of course, the canister / gas stoves stomp all over my little set-up in terms of cooking and boiling times. And don't even bring up the issue of melting snow, another win for the pressurized gas stove. Both systems have their advantages, so you'll have to take close a look at your needs before choosing what goes in your pack. For my needs though, this will work just fine.
Now I'll just sit back and wait for someone to tell me how dangerous cooking in a tin can is for my health :D
