Nurses Urge Water Safety Precautions after Saving Own Son’s Life in Near Drowning

Michael and Hilary Zunde are intensive care unit nurses, parents of two beautiful children and, now, advocates for pool and water safety after their 18-month-old son, Zachary, nearly drowned in February. The parents were able to save his life by performing CPR and calling 9-1-1 immediately.

The family bravely joined us this week to share their story with ABC Los Angeles in hopes that it will encourage other families to take important water safety measures, especially as we head into the summer season.

Dr. Michael Jimenez, medical director of our trauma center, also offered vital tips on how to prevent a drowning and what to do if someone is drowning, such as designating a “water watcher” and learning CPR.
