Warts - patient education

Warts are benign (not cancerous) skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called human papillomavirus (HPV), and different strains may cause them in different parts of the body. Warts can spread from one location on the body to another as well as from person to person by contact with the wart. Factors that increase the risk include use of public showers, working with meat, eczema and a weak immune system.
