Social anthropology turns practical — lessons from cooking with refugees | Ieva Raubiško | TEDxRiga
What does it mean for strangers to meet, recognize their differences, and work together? Is it possible all? When the European migration crisis brought a small wave of refugees to Latvia, Ieva Raubiško switched from her academic work as a social anthropologist to cooking together with refugees at a small social enterprise she set up in Riga. It soon became clear that cooking was so much more than just putting together the right ingredients... Ieva Raubiško devoted more than 10 years of her life to studying and teaching social anthropology before she turned to social entrepreneurship. Ieva obtained her PhD from the University of Oxford with an award‑winning dissertation on post‑war life in Chechnya. Throughout this process, she discovered that anthropological research often leads to political and practical engagement. It also raises awareness of complex problems and encourages the search for local and global solutions to them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
