Basically all life on earth comes directly or indirectly from sunlight. For example a leave of grass takes the sunlight as a direct source of energy. The leaf then gets eaten by a herbivore, which ultimately might up as prey for bigger predators. And natures ultimate goal is to do this in the most efficient way without wasting any excess energy.
All this makes it even more obvious to look in nature for improving our own energy production, usage and waste.
